We have all felt the hard ping – or rather the blunt punch in the face – which the recession has caused.  Jobs are dropping like flies in the winter, and people are losing their homes and everything that they own because they are up to their eyeballs in debt.  Credit card spending has gotten out of control (although you won’t hear those companies complaining too much) because people are trying to pay their bills and take care of their families with little income coming in.  The costs of everything from gas to milk have doubled.  It’s no wonder why there are so many people filing bankruptcy.

According to Christina Dugas of the USA Today, it is now estimated that the total bankruptcy filings this year will hit the 1.5 million mark.  Although this number is lower than the 2005 numbers when the laws were changed to weed out the abusers, it is still higher than last year’s numbers.

The main contributor to this high surge in bankruptcies is the huge amount of job losses in the U.S.  Dugas states that the numbers in job losses could be as high as 10% for this year.  Despite those rather bone-chilling statistics, it’s still no surprise that individual bankruptcies aren’t the only ones on the rise.

Corporate bankruptcies are also rising at astonishing rates.  Businesses can’t compete with the rising costs and poor economy, not to mention the reduction in consumer credit that is available and being used.  It is also predicted that the rise in business filings will add fuel to the fire and cause the number of consumer (individual) bankruptcies to rise even more.  It seems to be a never-ending chain.
